Bel Canto Choir returns from Italy

Choir Pisa photoIt is said that music is the universal language and that was very clear from the reception that The Bel Canto Children’s Chorus received on its recent tour of Italy in July.

The Chorus performed concerts in various villages and cities, including Camigliano, Norcia, Assisi, and Spoleto.  The audiences greeted the performances with standing ovations, tears and great enthusiasm. Even though many of them were unable to understand the lyrics, the choristers’ faces and hearts were able to convey beautiful messages through the music. NATIONAL PENN MAKES $20,000 DONATION TO FREEDOM VALLEY YMCA

2009_Freedom_Valley_Y_Pottstown_Branch_02Boyertown, Pa. – August 13, 2009 – National Penn announced today a $20,000 donation to Freedom Valley YMCA. The donation was made under the Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) Program, through which National Penn Bank and its divisions are contributing more than $300,000 in 2009.

The educational contribution will go to the Freedom Valley YMCA’s Financial Assistance Program and will be used to support pre-kindergarten (pre-K) scholarships available to local qualified families. The YMCA offers state approved curriculum, character development programs and food programs in well-equipped learning areas through four of its locations: Audubon YMCA Early Learning Center, Phoenixville YMCA Child Care Center, Pottstown YMCA Child Development Center and Spring Valley YMCA Early Learning Center. Children also participate in field trips, special in-house events, foreign language instruction, swimming and music lessons, and physical education through indoor and outdoor play time. Reading, PA—Aug. 13, 2009—The Reading-Berks Chapter of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen–in partnership with Kutztown University and the PA German Heritage Center—will hold its 60th Annual Juried Holiday Craft Show—one of the region’s most popular seasonal shopping events for authentic local art and crafts—will be held this year on Sat., Oct. 31 (9 a.m.-5 p.m.) and Sunday, Nov. 1 (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) at Kutztown, Pa.

Birdsboro’s Brendan Burke Plays at Grand Finale Concert

Birdsboro resident Brendan Burke recently played in the grand finale concert of the Pre-College Summer Jazz Institute at the University of the Arts. The Daniel Boone High School student was one of nearly 60 top high school jazz musicians from across the country to participate in the two-week residential program.

The students showed off their exceptional skills in a grand finale concert for their teachers – all University of the Arts faculty members – as well as families, friends and others. Students from four different ensembles performed, including a big band directed by Matt Gallagher, Lars Halle Band directed by Lars Halle, “Micelinous” directed by Tony Miceli, and a vocal ensemble directed by Justin Binek.
