It is said that music is the universal language and that was very clear from the reception that The Bel Canto Children’s Chorus received on its recent tour of Italy in July.
The Chorus performed concerts in various villages and cities, including Camigliano, Norcia, Assisi, and Spoleto. The audiences greeted the performances with standing ovations, tears and great enthusiasm. Even though many of them were unable to understand the lyrics, the choristers’ faces and hearts were able to convey beautiful messages through the music. The Chorus’ repertoire included songs from American composers and several Gospel numbers which were well received.
After 6 days of sightseeing through the Tuscan and Umbria areas and presenting both formal and informal concerts, the Chorus arrived in Rome where they visted the Forum, Coliseum, Cistine Chapel and the Vatican. Perhaps the biggest highlight of the trip for the Chorus was the honor of singing at Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican on their last evening in Rome.
The Chorus enjoyed the wonderful sights and tastes of Italy but most importantly, they came home with a greater appreciation of how music reaches into the heart…for both the chorister and the audience!
The Chorus is still accepting new choristers for the 2009-2010 season for their Intermediate and Preparatory Choirs (approximate ages 7-12); one Intermediate group rehearses in Souderton; another Intermediate group and the Preparatory Choir rehearse in Souderton.
